EOG Resources: Regulators approve series of wells in Bonaparte Basin

New York-listed EOG Resources has been given the green light to drill three exploration wells at the Beehive prospect off the Kimberley coast.

Offshore regulator NOPSEMA approved the project’s environmental plan on Thursday after previously endorsing the company’s proposal to drill one well.

EOG is yet to confirm when work will start but it will have a five-year window.

Beehive is in the Bonaparte Basin, close to WA’s border with the Northern Territory.

Nearby is the Blacktip field — supplying gas into Darwin — and the Petrel, Tern and Frigate fields, which were once touted for a multibillion-dollar floating LNG plant under consideration by Santos and GDF Suez. That proposal was junked 10years ago.

Regulatory filings show EOG expects Beehive will likely hold oil.

EOG is a $US70 billion ($110b) company with about 3000 staff. It has interests in onshore basins across the US.

The American business bought the title from Melbana Energy in 2021.

It is the second drilling campaign in the Bonaparte Basin signed off by NOPSEMA in recent weeks. The regulator approved an environmental plan for Jadestone Energy at the Montara oil field just before Christmas.
