EPA reaches settlement with Akron Steel Treating Co. for alleged hazardous waste violations

An Akron company has agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over alleged hazardous waste violations.

The company, Akron Steel Treating Co., based at 336 Morgan Ave., will address the violations and pay a civil penalty of $105,855, according to a news release from the EPA.

The company, which treats carbon and stainless steel parts with heat, was alleged to have stored hazardous waste at the facility for more than 180 days without a required permit. The company was cited for three violations:

Exceeding the weight limit for hazardous waste storage.

Failing to maintain a manifest system to track waste shipped off-site.

Lacking sufficient aisle space in hazardous waste storage areas and failing to properly label hazardous waste storage containers.

“EPA is dedicated to protecting communities such as Akron from the dangers posed by improper and unregulated hazardous waste storage,” EPA Region 5 Administrator Debra Shore said in the release. “This settlement with Akron Steel Treating underscores EPA’s commitment to enforcing regulations and promoting environmental justice.”

The release noted the facility is “in a community with potential environmental justice concerns,” which involve the “fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.”
