Estia Festival Celebrates Greek Culture and Heritage in Australia
The vibrant 2025 Estia Greek festival, a celebration of culture, community and connection is set to take place for another year in Australia, on February 1st, 2025.
The festival, first held in 1994, is organized by the Greek Community of Tasmania and remains a major cultural event in Hobart, Tasmania’s capital. This year it has been expanded from one to two days, until February 2. It features authentic Greek food, like souvlaki and loukoumades, live music (traditional folk and modern bouzouki), traditional Greek dancing and family-friendly activities, aiming to bring the sounds, sights and flavors of Greece to the heart of Hobart and the broader Tasmanian population. Moreover, it immerses those who attend in authentic Greek traditions and honors generations of Greek migrants who have contributed to Tasmania’s cultural and social fabric. Up to 10,000 locals and tourists attend the festival each year.
“The Estia Greek Festival is more than just an event,” says Manoli Kalymnios, President of the Greek Community of Tasmania. “It’s a celebration of heritage, tradition, and community. It’s a chance to share the vibrant spirit of Greek culture with everyone in Tasmania.”
On February 9, the Estia Cup, between Greece and Italy will take place at Warrior Park. Later, on February 12, the lecture “Greek Antiquities During WWII” will be presented by renowned archaeologist Dr. Stavros Paspalas. The festival will be concluded on the evening of February 15, with the annual Taverna Night.
Estia Greek Festival, a celebration of diversity and community
The heart and soul of the Estia Greek Festival are its dedicated volunteers. For thirty years, organizers say, its their passion and commitment that bring the event to life each year. From preparing traditional Greek sweets to organizing performances, the festival is a community effort that reflects the generosity and spirit of Hobart’s Greek community.
Barbara Baker, Tasmania’s Governor, says that the festival is a testament “to the hard work of many dedicated volunteers.”
“The Estia Greek Festival wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our community,” says Emmanuel Roussos, the festival organizer. “This event is truly a labor of love, showcasing the talents and generosity of so many people.”
That’s why, according to organizers, the festival is not just about celebrating Greek heritage but moreover, it’s about bringing people together and creating a sense of belonging to all who attend.
The Greek community in Tasmania
The Greek community in Tasmania has a long and proud history, with roots stretching back to the early 20th century.
Many Greek migrants arrived in search of new opportunities, bringing with them their language, traditions and an unwavering sense of community. These cultural values have been passed down through generations and remain at the heart of the festival.
The Estia (meaning ‘home’ in Greek) Greek Festival is a reflection of this community’s dedication to preserving their heritage while sharing it with others.
