Even Ghostface Couldn’t Save Mortal Kombat 1 As Leaks Suggest Upcoming DLCs Cancelled Due to Poor Sales
Recently, a purported insider claims that NetherRealm has canceled its plans for a new Mortal Kombat 1-story expansion and a new wave of DLC fighters. This comes after the poor sales of Khaos Reigns, the first story-based DLC expansion for Mortal Kombat 1, which was released earlier this year.
This new plot continues where the base game’s conclusion left off, with an alternate Havok threatening to spread chaos across the multiverse and endangering the world of Mortal Kombat 1. However, this recent leak suggest we won’t be getting any further story expansion as well.
No Mortal Kombat 1 – Kombat Pack 3: Supposed Insider Claims
According to a Reddit user going by the handle of FateUnknown, it appears that Kombat Pack 2 may be the final set of new content for Mortal Kombat 1. FateUnknown said there wouldn’t be a Kombat Pack 3 during a discussion about a recent rumor on r/Mortalkombatleaks.
Later, in another thread, he clarified that a second story campaign and this hypothetical Kombat Pack were originally planned for the game before NetherRealm decided to scrap them. They go on to say that since NetherRealm had apparently already begun working on Kameo Fighters prior to this decision, there may be one or two more released.
Naturally, all of this is merely an unsubstantiated report from a purported leaker, and until NetherRealm issues a formal statement, it will be impossible to determine whether or not their assertions are true.
Conan and T-1000 are the two Kombat Pack 2 guest fighters that Mortal Kombat 1 still needs to release, even if this rumor is accurate. After that, it’s unclear what NetherRealm will create for its upcoming fighting game project, whether it’ll be the eagerly anticipated Injustice 3 or another Mortal Kombat sequel.
The Last DLC of Mortal Kombat 1 Never Did Justice to Its Franchise
When asked why NetherRealm decided to scrap its plans for a future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, the alleged leaker pointed to Khaos Reigns’ dismal sales. Many Reddit users aren’t surprised either, complaining about the expansion’s weak plot and asserting that the previous Mortal Kombat 1 DLC was being sold for too much. Before attempting Khaos Reigns for themselves, some have said they are waiting for it to be made available at a reduced price.
Khaos Reigns debuted new iterations of the iconic Mortal Kombat characters Cyrax (a more honorable Lin Kuei who eventually defected and joined Scorpion’s rival Shirai Ryu), Sektor (a reimagined loyal member of the Lin Kuei clan driven to restore Bi-Han), and Noob Saibot (a twisted version of Sub-Zero who is brainwashed into being Titan Havok’s lackey).
Kombat Pack 2 features three special guest characters, similar to the previous Mortal Kombat 1 DLC pack. Scream’s Ghostface was added earlier this month. Conan the Barbarian and the T-1000 from the Terminator movies will soon join the masked murderer.
