Expert Reveals its Most Flaunted Feature Made “Barely any difference” for Elden Ring

Back in September, Sony revealed that it was going to release an enhanced version of PlayStation 5, confirming the rumors that the PS5 Pro was on the way. The reveal of the console garnered a mixed bag from the entire industry due to its hefty price tag and lack of a physical disc drive. Still, many expected that the console’s upgraded hardware would justify everything.

PS5 Pro is now out in the wild, and it has failed to make any impression on gamers. The console doesn’t bring much to the table like the Japanese company had promised during the reveal. What’s even worse is that one of its biggest features, advanced ray tracing, doesn’t change anything for games, even such as Elden Ring.

PS5 Pro’s Advanced Ray Tracing is a Complete Flop

Sony’s refresh of the PlayStation 5 was supposed to be the defining moment for the company. When the PS5 Pro was initially revealed, Sony promised that it would improve upon the original console in three key ways: larger GPU, custom AI-driven upscaling, and, most crucially, advanced ray tracing.

According to Sony, PS5 Pro‘s advanced ray tracing capabilities would’ve allowed for more dynamic reflections and refraction of lights in supported games. This feature was expected to allow rays to be cast at double or even triple the speeds of the current PS5 console.

You’d think that with beefier hardware and advanced ray tracing capabilities, the PS5 would allow games such as Elden Ring to smoothly reach 60 FPS. However, that’s not the case. Digital Foundry has put out a new video putting the PS5 Pro’s new hardware to the test, and it has massively failed.

While running Elden Ring, the console struggles with performance, just like the standard PlayStation 5, which is already infamous for its poor frame rates.

Performance on the Pro model varies a lot, and the inconsistencies can be attributed to Pro’s GPU and CPU alternating around heavy tasks, making it challenging to get ray tracing performance. The console’s ray tracing capabilities are so lackluster that you feel there’s “barely any difference at all.”

However, it’s still worth noting that Elden Ring hasn’t received a dedicated patch for the new console, and this testing was done with the new Game Boost feature, which looks to enhance the performance patch.

FromSoftware could always roll out a patch for PS5 Pro, which might enhance performance across the board.

Sony Has a Special Surprise for PS5 Pro

Now that the PS5 Pro is finally out, gamers who’ve received their units have made an exciting discovery. The console comes with an exclusive background screen that wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the advertising campaigns.

What’s so special is that this new background features a computer ship that’s flowing with electricity through its circuits and is being praised by the community despite the console failing to hit the mark.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a console shipping with new background themes. Even the Xbox One X had something similar when it debuted in 2017. PlayStation fans are excited to see that Sony is once again embracing more backgrounds and themes, as these were quite common during PS4 days but were absent at the start of the PS5 generation.

Let’s hope the company can also bring more customization options for the PlayStation consoles in the near future.

With that said, do you think PS5 Pro is Sony’s biggest failure so far? Let us know in the comments below.
