Fake photos to call transcripts, AI is coming to phones

The world’s three leading smartphone makers have launched artificial intelligence to their devices in a race to win over consumers.

From image creation to advanced voice assistants, these are the AI features the tech giants want to put inside your pocket this year.

Samsung:

First to launch AI in smartphones in early 2024, the South Korean tech giant has partnered more closely with Google for its sequel. Artificial intelligence is built into its operating system in upcoming Galaxy S25 phones and Google’s Gemini is programmed into a button on its side. New AI features include phone call transcripts, personalised recommendations and video sound editing. The close partnership with Google does remove Samsung’s original voice assistant, Bixby, from the picture, though the company says it will return in home appliances.

Apple:

Launched Apple Intelligence in late 2024 that, with user permission, shares complex queries to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company’s AI features include proofreading and rewriting text, notification summaries, and a dedicated Image Playground app that can create images from text prompts. Apple has been praised by some technology experts for its approach to permissions and privacy with AI, but recently suspended AI-generated news summaries due to inaccurate information.

Google:

The internet giant introduced a long list of AI features in its Pixel phones in late 2024, including advanced photo manipulation, search features, and more natural two-way conversations with its assistant, Gemini. AI photo options in Pixel 9 smartphones include artificially adding or removing image backgrounds and adding the picture-taker to photos after they are snapped. Gemini will also create images for users again after the company suspended the feature in February 2024 for depicting inaccurate historical images.
