Federal election 2025: Anthony Albanese makes re-election pitch in major National Press Club address
Anthony Albanese has announced education reform milestones and detailed an apprenticeship incentive program in his first National Press Club speech of 2025, marking the traditional start of the election year.
The Prime Minister outlined his pitch to provide apprentice bricklayers, electricians, carpenters and joiners up to $10,000 in a bid to keep more tradies in the pipeline to build 1.2 million homes by 2029.
He also confirmed Victoria and South Australia were the latest states to sign on to the Better and Fairer Schools funding agreement to guarantee an increase of the Schooling Resource Standard to 22.5 per cent.
Queensland and NSW are now the only two states who have not signed up. Both say the SRS should be funded at 25 per cent to close the gap.
His address heavily focused on his achievements during his first term, and set out what he said was a clear choice for voters at the next election – due by mid-May – between “two fundamentally different approaches and vastly different agendas”.
“This year’s election is not a matter of competing plans striving for the same outcome. It’s not two roads that ultimately lead to the same destination. This election is a choice between two fundamentally different approaches and vastly different agendas,” he said.
“Your choice has never been more clear. And the consequences of your choice – for your job, your wage, your child’s education, your healthcare, and your environment – have never been more immediate.”
More to come.
