Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Failed to Beat Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Record Breaking Run

Capcom’s latest release, Dragon’s Dogma 2, which is a sequel to the 2012 game, has been one of the most-anticipated titles of this year. The game was released on March 21 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics at launch.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has improved its gameplay in comparison to its predecessor and comes with a dynamic and dense game world and emergent narrative. Additionally, it became the second best-selling game during its launch week in Japan with 68,592 units sold.

When players got their hands on Dragon’s Dogma 2, many complained of the game being poorly optimized, and facing severe frame rate drops across all platforms. Much of the criticism was pointed towards the game’s performance on PCs, and NPCs putting a strain on the CPU.

It looks like all of these hiccups didn’t stop the game from setting some records for Capcom. According to recent information shared by Christopher Dring, who is the head of GamesIndustry, in a tweet on X, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has managed to achieve some impressive feat.

According to the GSD sales report, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the biggest game launch in the UK so far this year in terms of digital sales. Additionally, this also means that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has surpassed the recently launched Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth in terms of sales in the U.K. Moreover, Dragon’s Dogma 2  has also managed to beat other impressive titles like Helldivers 2 by the looks of the report at least at launch.

However, according to the data, Dragon’s Dogma 2 reached the top spot by beating Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth only by a narrow margin. The game did not have any trouble overshadowing Helldivers 2 as the game had an average start at launch.

It should be noted that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available on multiple platforms such as PC and Xbox Series X/S, whereas Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is a PlayStation 5 exclusive with no confirmation about a PC release. When it comes to Helldivers 2, the game was launched on PS5 and PC, and gained traction only after a few days of its launch.

The data on Steam also has good news Dragon’s Dogma fans. While Counter-Strike 2 was the highest-grossing title on the platform, Dragon’s Dogma 2 became the highest-ranked game when it comes to premium titles. Helldivers 2 secured the second spot on the list when it came to premium titles.

Dragon’s Dogma 2, which came out on March 22, has more than 100,000 in-game players at the time of writing on Steam. Despite the frame rate drop issues, the game has managed to receive more than 37,000 positive reviews on the platform. The game also had an all time peak of 228,585 in-game players six days ago on Steam.

While the global sales number of Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t out yet, according to sales data from Famitsu, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, the title it defeated in the U.K, sold 262,656 units in its launch week and only 24,482 copies in its second week on the market.
