Final Fantasy XIV gives the lowdown on new mobile details in interview with director Naoki Yoshida

  • Final Fantasy XIV Mobile hype is hotting up
  • And the latest fuel on the fire is a new interview with director Naoki Yoshida
  • He gives the inside scoop on the background of FFXIV Mobile, and what you can expect

The news that Final Fantasy XIV (or 14 if we’re not going by Roman numerals) was coming to mobile was rightly met with huge excitement. And if you’re hungry for more details, you won’t need to wait long, because a new, official interview with producer and director Naoki Yoshida has just been released that gives the inside scoop on the upcoming port.

Naoki Yoshida needs little introduction for longtime Final Fantasy fans, but for those not familiar his leadership is what is often credited with reviving FFXIV after a disastrous launch. And while it’s almost certain it was a team effort, there’s no doubt Yoshida’s experience and tenure at Square Enix are still impressive, and he had a significant contribution to reviving the MMORPG.

The most interesting revelation from this interview is perhaps that a mobile version had been considered for longer than most might expect, however, it had been initially dismissed as impossible. But after speaking with folks from Lightspeed Studios, it seems a new deal was struck when it became clear it was possible to translate Final Fantasy XIV faithfully to mobile.

Finality

Final Fantasy XIV went from being a cautionary tale about how difficult it can be to translate a successful franchise into an MMORPG, to arguably being a major cornerstone of the genre. And with it set to arrive on mobile a lot of people, us included, are rightfully hungry for details to see what kind of mark the world of Eorzea will make

Some of you may be disappointed to learn that it won’t be a one-to-one adaptation, with the intent of treating FFXIV Mobile as a “sister title” rather than on parity with the mainline release. But regardless, for those hungry to enjoy it on the go Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is sure to be a majorly-anticipated release.
