Fire and Rescue NSW work to extinguish blaze at Nambucca Sports Leagues and Sports Club

Firefighters are facing complications as they work to extinguish a large blaze inside Nambucca Sports Leagues and Sports Club on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews responded after fire and smoke was noticed inside the building in Sports St at Nambucca Heads shortly before 6am on Wednesday.

Firefighters were met with intense fire activity when they arrived on scene, with about 40 firefighters and nine fire trucks trying to restrict the blaze.

NSW Ambulance paramedics are treating one person who escaped the fire.

However, the firefighters continue to encounter challenges, as several large gas cylinders were exposed to the flames as well as significant roof and structural collapse and issues with the water supply.

Crews were able to access additional hydrants, relaying water from truck to truck to the scene to assist with the blaze.

“Crews from across the Mid North Coast faced significant risks, including a well-developed fire, structural collapse, and the presence of gas cylinders”, FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said.

“Our crews initially entered the building to attack the fire internally but retreated as the building began to collapse, prioritising the safety of firefighters while continuing operations from the outside.

“This has been a devastating loss for the Nambucca Heads community, with the destruction of a much-loved local facility.

“Firefighters worked tirelessly under extremely challenging conditions to protect life and property and contain the blaze.

“Thank you to all emergency services involved including the NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Police, and NSW Ambulance for their collaboration and support.”

Crews are expected to remain on site for an extended period as they work to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
