Firewatch-Inspired Game Two Falls Offers Players A Look At Indigenous History

The 2024 release calendar is slowly coming to a close, but there are still games worth paying attention to, especially those flying under the radar. Developed by Unreliable Narrators, Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina) is a narrative-driven exploration game that presents a story from two perspectives in a way that doesn’t happen often, contrasting French and Indigenous first encounters.

Released on November 8, just in time for Native American Heritage Month, Two Falls is set in 17th century Canadian wilderness starring Jeanne, a French King’s Daughter stranded from the colonies, and Maikan, a Innu hunter who’s trying to uncover the source of trouble in his native forest, land of his ancestors. Firewatch and What Remains of Edith Finch are the main inspirations behind the game.

Even though the story is linear, there are decisions and actions to make that will impact both Jeanne and Maikan throughout the story. Most of the bulk is about experiencing 17th-century environments, including detective-style scene inspections and dialogue with other characters along the way.

Two Falls’ composer, art director, and writer–as well as some actors and 3D artists–all come from various Native communities across Canada, giving the game an authentic Indigenous perspective. The game is available on PC, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be released at a later date.
