Former mayor shines light on growing homeless camp along San Diego River

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A large homeless camp has developed along the San Diego River and a politician currently running for county office wants to shed light on the issue.

Kevin Faulconer served as San Diego’s 36th mayor until 2020 and is now running for the District 3 seat on the county board of supervisors against incumbent Terra Lawson-Remer. Faulconer has been critical of both the city and the county governments, saying the homeless encampment is not just a humanitarian crisis but environmental as well.

The site of the camp is supposed to be a “habitat restoration area” in the city of San Diego’s jurisdiction. But the county of San Diego is also involved, having received a $17 million dollar grant from the state of California dedicated to cleaning up the river.
