Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford teases Borderlands 4

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has teased the next Borderlands game again.

Posting on X following heavy criticism of the newly released Borderlands film, which has got off to a slow start at the box office, Pitchford said Gearbox is hard at work on the next entry in the looter shooter series.

“So what you’re saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done,” he wrote. “I’m super flattered! We’re working extra hard four you on what’s next….”

Publisher 2K confirmed that the next Borderlands game was in active development earlier this year, after it announced that it had acquired Gearbox Entertainment from Embracer Group for $460 million.

Speaking to GamesRadar last month, Pitchford suggested fans wouldn’t have to wait long for more information about it.

“I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things, and that we’re working on big things,” the Gearbox co-founder said.

“I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”

Pitchford teased that an announcement about the next Borderlands game could come “before the end of the year” and “maybe sooner”.

He added: “I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us—so I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we’ve got so much to say!”

The Borderlands series has sold almost 87 million units since launching in 2009, according to 2K.

The most recent mainline series entry, 2019’s Borderlands 3, is the publisher’s fastest-selling title and has sold over 20 million copies.

2012’s Borderlands 2 is 2K’s top-selling game since the label’s inception seven years earlier, with over 29 million copies sold.
