Gears Fans Worry the Franchise May Stiff Gears of War 6 with the Same Treatment Mass Effect Andromeda Received

Gears of War: E-Day is one of the most anticipated games for Xbox players. The beloved franchise finally returns in an all-new prequel title with fan-favorite characters, Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, returning.

The Gears franchise has seen its ups and downs since the original trilogy ended in 2011. The Coalition have kept the series alive with Gears of War 4 in 2016, followed up by Gears 5 a few years later.

That game did not leave a lasting impact on fans as the story was not as solid as previous installments. With Gears of War 6 still on the table, fans are worried E-Day might be the final straw.

Is the Gears Franchise in Danger?

It’s been over four years since the last Gears of War game was released. Gears Tactics was far from the traditional third-person shooter gameplay but it’s still a well-made turn-based tactics game.

Gears 5 in 2019 missed the mark story wise but had phenomenal gameplay for its multiplayer action. With Gears of War: E-Day taking place on Emergence Day, this is going to be the biggest prequel game the franchise has seen so far.

The amount of hype and excitement is at an all time high for the Gears community but it begs the question: what’s next if E-Day fails?

The best case scenario would be for E-Day to succeed which in turn motivates The Coalition and Microsoft to put any and all resources into crafting Gears 6

Worst case scenario is for E-Day to do poorly which would kill any and all excitement for future Gears of War projects. If this game does fail, will the sixth game get canned?

Gears of War 6 is very likely to launch on the Xbox Series X|S before the end of the console’s lifespan (if it even gets greenlit). Xbox cannot afford to lose out on a core franchise like Gears of War, even if E-Day ends up failing.

Everything we know about the game is exciting and promising. The Coalition are well aware of missing the mark on Gears 5’s story. To reinvigorate the audience and themselves, why not go back to Emergence Day to fully tell the story of what happened when the Locust Horde attacked?

In comparison, BioWare has not been doing well for a few years now. Mass Effect: Andromeda was a massive disappointment critically and financially. This caused a series of books to spawn to flesh out the Andromeda story.

BioWare followed up with Anthem which was another failure. The upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard might be the last chance of redemption for the Canadian developers under EA.

Obviously, anything can happen with Xbox now, as it shut down Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin about three months ago.

Let’s hope Gears of War: E-Day does its best to recapture the thrilling story and engaging gameplay. The upcoming title launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC, built with the Unreal Engine 5.
