God of War Creator Gave His Approval For Tom Hardy to Play Kratos Long Before Dwayne Johnson vs Christopher Judge Debate Even Started

God of War is one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world right now. This action-adventure series began its journey in 2005 and, from there, went on to achieve so many accolades. The franchise recently shaped its dominance in the PC arena as well with Valhalla in December 2023.

Now, there is a live-action adaptation of the game is in plan. And the most exciting debate is about who is going to take the honors to fill in the shoes of Kratos, the main protagonist of the series. The Dwayne Johnson vs. Christopher Judge battle is already there. But many ago, the director of the 2018 game himself had his say.

The Director of God of War Has His Opinion About the On-screen Kratos

In a video that aired 6 years ago, IGN had Cory Barlog, the director of God of War (2018), as its main guest. In that video, Barlog was asked to respond to the comments on IGN’s channel.

And interestingly, the first comment that popped up was, “Tom Hardy would make a brilliant live-action Kratos.” On which, this is what the director of the popular title had to say:

That guy can play anything. Tom Hardy is the world serpent. I think that would be pretty good. Tom Hardy is rock.

Seeing the comments from Barlog, it’s a no-brainer that the director is a huge fan of the Venom-famed actor. And the most interesting part is that this comment came out way before the Dwayne Johnson vs. Christopher Judge battle broke out.

As of now, there’s no official confirmation of who is going to play the role of the most popular character in the franchise. Forget about character; at the beginning of this year, some rumor spread out that the writing process of the live-action series is still underway. So, the casting process is still a long way to go.

Who Can Play Kratos Then?

However, this didn’t stop speculation around the community. Many think Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the perfect fit for the role because of his muscular look and aggressive attitude. On the other hand, the voice actor of Kratons in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok (2022), Christopher Judge, is a favorite pick for many fans.

Amidst the Johnson vs. Judge battle, Aquaman-famed Jason Momoma has also been thrown around the role. The battle got so intense between the ex-WWE superstar and the popular voice actor, that the later once decided to abandon the long-hailed franchise.

Along with them, Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, can be a good choice for the role, again for the muscular role and serious facial attributes. But unlike The Rock, Triple H is still a part of WWE.

On the other hand, another popular WWE stalwart, Dave Bautista, can be a good choice. But it’s highly doubtful that he again put his feet in the shoes of another physically demanding role after leaving Drax of Guardians of the Galaxy behind.

As of now, there’s no surety who is going to step up to become the Kratos on the silver screen in the highly anticipated live-action adaptation. What’s your opinion? Who should be in charge of this role?
