Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Gets New Walmart-Exclusive Steelbook

The most recent entry in the Monsterverse cinematic universe, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, is getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, and this one comes packaged inside of a very cool steelbook cover. Priced at $30, this Walmart-exclusive version of the will film will be released on December 3.

While the tussle between Godzilla and Kong is kept much shorter in this film–although you do get to see the king of the monsters suplex the ape wonder through a pyramid–The New Empire has no shortage of massive kaiju brawls. The film dives further into the mythology surrounding these two titans, and reveals that Kong isn’t the last of his kind. Unfortunately, these Kong kaiju are ruled over by the Scar King, a tyrannical titan aiming to conquer the surface world and who has gained control of a titan that can give even a powered-up Kong a run for its money.

This 4K release of The New Empire includes the film on a standard Blu-ray disc, as well as a code for a digital streaming version. For the bonus materials, you’ll get the following extras:

While this new Hollywood take on Godzilla has led to some of the most entertaining blockbusters of the past decade, Japanese filmmakers are still regularly producing new movies starring the giant monster, with Godzilla Minus One being the most recent–and one of the best. Godzilla Minus One earned critical acclaim for its return to the series’ dark thematic roots and won an Academy Award for its impressive visual effects. Godzilla Minus One is available in a 4K Blu-ray edition for $30 (down from $50) at Amazon.

Those curious about Godzilla’s earlier eras can also grab the Godzilla: The Showa Era Films Criterion Collection for $225 at Amazon. The special edition Blu-ray includes 15 Godzilla films released between 1954 and 1975, including the original black-and-white horror film that started the franchise. It’s the full collection is too expensive, preorders are also open for Criterion Collection’s reprint of its Godzilla 1954 4K release, which drops on November 5.
