GOTY Snub and No W at Golden Joystick Awards For Silent Hill 2 Has Fans Convinced That The Awards are Rigged

As the gaming industry’s award season for 2024 has started, it would seem that the Silent Hill 2 remake has drawn the short end of the stick. Despite its success, the remake of the classic horror game failed to win any categories at the Golden Joystick Awards.

And fans aren’t happy because what’s even more shocking is its exclusion from the Game of the Year (GOTY) nominations at The Game Awards. Fans have not shied away from making accusations. Many argue that the remake deserved recognition not just for its legacy but also for its technical and artistic achievements.

Silent Hill 2 is Just Getting Snubbed Left and Right

The 2024 Golden Joystick Awards featured Silent Hill 2 in categories such as Best Audio Design and Best Lead Performance, yet it left the event empty-handed. Fans expected the game to at least take the award for Best Audio Design but even that slipped through its hands.

One Redditor highlighted the meticulous attention to detail that the game had in terms of auditory quality. The combination of creaking corn stalks, tumbling rocks, ghostly echoes and so much more, created a truly award-worthy experience.

Another user even went so far as to label the results “legitimately insane” given the effort and innovation displayed by developer Bloober Team. It also calls into question the fairness of the voting system and if there are third-party influences on the decisions.

What’s added to this is Silent Hill 2’s omission from the GOTY nominees at The Game Awards. While it got nominations in five other categories including Best Performance for Luke Roberts and Best Score and Music, it failed to make the cut for GOTY or Best Game Direction.

Fans drew comparisons to last year’s GOTY nominee Resident Evil 4 Remake, arguing that Silent Hill 2 deserved similar recognition. For some, the exclusion signals a lack of appreciation for the horror genre and remakes, both of which face frequent undervaluation.

Many fans blamed the awards’ voting systems. The Golden Joystick Awards rely entirely on audience votes, often favoring mainstream popularity over technical achievements. In contrast, The Game Awards balance jury and audience votes but have not been immune to controversy.

What particularly stings for fans is that Elden Ring’s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, received a GOTY nomination while Silent Hill 2 didn’t. Fans questioned how a downloadable expansion could qualify over a full-fledged game like Silent Hill 2.

Genre bias is another sore point for the Silent Hill 2 community. Horror games are often overlooked despite their excellence in story or technical aspects. People tend to ignore them and focus on action and RPG titles and fans argue that the SH2 remake’s exclusion reflects the disrespect for the horror genre.

Despite its snubs, Silent Hill 2 received nominations in multiple categories at The Game Awards and The Golden Joystick Awards. Despite any perceived bias or favoritism, there is no denying that the game is nothing short of excellent.

The remake’s success has rebuilt the franchise’s relevance and brought more positive attention to the horror genre of gaming. Bloober Team did an excellent job of making a faithful yet innovative remake.
