ā€˜Hard freezeā€™ from ā€˜polar air massā€™ to blanket Charlotte and the mountains, NWS says

A ā€œhard freezeā€ from a ā€œpolar air massā€ is expected to descend on Charlotte, the North Carolina mountains and Upstate South Carolina this weekend and could last for days, National Weather Service meteorologists said Friday.

Overnight low temperatures could plummet into the mid- to low 20s early and mid-next week in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, according to the NWS Charlotte forecast at noon Friday.

ā€œHigher elevations in the mountains, generally above 3,500 feet, will experience an extended period of below freezing temperatures through Tuesday night,ā€ according to the NWS alert. ā€œElsewhere across the area, a hard freeze is likely each morning.ā€

The coldest air of the season was expected to arrive in the Charlotte region late Friday and early Saturday, the NWS office in Greer, South Carolina, said Friday morning on the social media site X.

Wear mittens or gloves, dress in layers and keep your pets safe from the frigid temps, NWS meteorologists said.
