Hasbro Is Teasing Its Next Big D&D Game And What It Learned From BG3’s Success

Hasbro, which owns the Dungeons and Dragons franchise through Wizards of the Coast, has big plans for its upcoming D&D video games after the massive success of Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3. With more games on the way from Hasbro’s internal studios, the company says it’s taking a few lessons from what Larian did with Baldur’s Gate.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Hasbro’s head of game studios Dan Ayoub spoke on Baldur’s Gate 3’s success, and what it means for future D&D games. “I think it proved for us that people really want great D&D games. We’re certainly doing that,” Ayoub said.

According to Ayoub, BG3’s success proved that there’s a market for a high quality D&D game, as well as showing that a successful game in the genre is likely to bring more players into the actual tabletop game. The third lesson Ayoub has taken from BG3 regards how the game was developed, which he describes as “the importance of taking time to get it right.”

“That’s a game that Larian was very diligent, very adamant about. We’re going to have a long dev cycle and take the time we need to get it right … We’re taking a similar approach with the internal titles,” Ayoub adds. “We’ve got to make sure the ones coming in now from our AAA studios hit home in a big way.”

“Our Montreal studio is working on a really, really cool D&D game. We’re going to be able to start talking more about that hopefully soon,” Ayoub said on Hasbro’s internal projects. The Montreal studio in question is Invoke Studios, which was formerly known as Tuque Games, the developer behind Dark Alliance.

The rebrand was announced back in 2022, along with the news that Invoke would be working on an ambitious new AAA title in the Dungeons and Dragons universe. The game is still unannounced, but it looks like Hasbro is getting ready to reveal more about the title soon.

Hasbro also works with a number of third-party studios on Dungeons and Dragons games, for instance Dreamlight Valley developer Gameloft Montreal, which just announced it was working on a D&D game that would combine elements of life sims, survival games, and action-RPG.
