Here’s The Latest On Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action And Anime Projects

In October 2023, CD Projekt announced a partnership with Anonymous Content for a live-action project set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. But how is this project coming along? And what is the status of the previously announced new Cyberpunk anime for Netflix?

CD Projekt management said on an earnings call today, November 26, that the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action project remains in the conceptual stage, but it has progressed beyond where it was a year ago when it was announced. However, management confirmed it’s not yet being shopped to potential streamers/studios, but that could happen as soon as within the next 12 months.

In terms of the funding for the concept, CD Projekt is funding this–but not the full project if and when it goes into production. “We would not be funding the whole shooting of the live-action project. That is not in the plan,” the company said, adding that the cost of this early production package would not be comparable to the production cost for the entire show.

Anonymous Content is a media company that produced the shows True Detective and Mr. Robot, and the films Spotlight and The Revenant. CD Projekt is working specifically with chief creative officer David Levine, who previously worked at HBO and helped get Game of Thrones off the ground.

In October 2023, CD Projekt said it was looking for a screenwriter to come up with a story for a live-action Cyberpunk project, whether that be a film or a TV series.

As for the new Cyberpunk anime, CD Projekt management confirmed it’s still in the works, following an initial announcement of the project back in September 2024. It remains to be seen what this project could be, however, including whether or not it’s a sequel or extension of the previously released Cyberpunk Edgerunners series.

As for the Cyberpunk game series, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is now in development under the codename Orion. Cyberpunk 2077 had a poor start upon release in December 2020 but has become among the best-selling video games of all time, surpassing 30 million copies sold. The game’s expansion, Phantom Liberty, has sold more than 8 million copies.

CD Projekt is also making The Witcher 4, and it’s now entered full production.
