Hey Arrowhead, Where is the Review Bomb Cape?

In the world of Helldivers 2, the fight for managed democracy is seemingly never-ending. But sometimes, the battles extend beyond the frontlines of the war against the alien hordes. Earlier this year, the Helldivers community found itself embroiled in a different kind of conflict—one that pitted them against the very company that brought the game to life.

The issue at hand? Sony’s controversial decision to require all PC players to link their Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account, effectively locking out gamers from 177 countries where PSN is not available. The backlash was swift and severe, with over 200,000 negative reviews flooding the game’s Steam page, bringing its overall rating down to “Mixed.”

The Promise of a Helldivers 2 Review Bomb Cape

In the aftermath of this chaos, Arrowhead Game Studios made a promise to the community. As a way of acknowledging the players’ frustrations and celebrating their eventual victory, the studio announced that it would be releasing a special “Review Bomb” cape as a cosmetic item in the game.

Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt even went on record saying that the cape was ready to go, and that the team was just waiting for the right time to release it. But months have passed since then, and the cape is still nowhere to be seen.

You know what, I think it’s time to release the “”review bomb”” cape. Sony will never fold, so it’s now or never.

The post sparked a heated debate among the Helldivers 2 community, with some players arguing that the cape should be released as a matter of principle, while others questioned the appropriateness of celebrating a victory that never truly materialized.

Others pointed out that releasing the cape now would be akin to declaring “mission accomplished” before the job was truly done.

The Unresolved Issue of Region Locking

While Sony did eventually relent and remove the PSN linking requirement for existing players, the fact remains that Helldivers 2 is still unavailable for purchase in the 177 countries affected by the original decision. In essence, the review bombing campaign only succeeded in securing access for those who had already bought the game – but for everyone else, the battle rages on.

As one player pointed out, the focus should be on pressuring Sony to lift the region locking altogether, rather than on cosmetic rewards.

It’s a sentiment that echoes throughout the Helldivers community—a sense that the fight is far from over, and that celebrating now would be premature at best, and insensitive at worst.

For Arrowhead’s part, the studio has remained silent on the issue of the Review Bomb cape in recent months. Whether this is due to ongoing negotiations with Sony, or simply a desire to let the controversy die down, is anyone’s guess.

But one thing is clear: until all players have equal access to Helldivers 2, regardless of their country of origin, the promise of the Review Bomb cape will remain unfulfilled. And for a community that prides itself on leaving no one behind, that’s a bitter pill to swallow.

What do you think about the Review Bomb cape controversy? Should Arrowhead release the cape as a matter of principle or wait until the region-locking issue is resolved? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
