Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Confession for a Bloodborne Remake Hints a PS6 Connection
Released in 2015, Bloodborne was a massive hit in the gaming industry, with almost 7.5 million copies sold by February 2022. With a mix of soulsborne gameplay and a plot that was heavily inspired by Lovecraftian Horror, this challenging and intense game is not for the faint of heart. The game has also been widely regarded as among the greatest video games of all time.
Despite the exceptionally good reception of the game, something that limited the game from reaching its peak is the game’s exclusivity. Bloodborne was released on the PS4, as an exclusive game for the eighth-generation consoles. This posed a problem for the fans as they continued to yearn for a remake and a PC port of the title, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Miyazaki’s take on a Bloodborne remake
Bloodborne is a game exclusive to the PlayStation 4. The concept was born when Japan Studio of Sony Interactive Entertainment and FromSoftware decided to make a game proprietary to the eighth-generation console.
Although Hidektaka Miyazaki, the video game director of Bloodborne loves the game and wants a remake of the game, his company does not own the intellectual property of the game. Sony Interactive Entertainment owns the IP of Bloodborne.
In an interview with IGN, when asked about a remake of Bloodborne, Miyazaki said he has no place to talk about the game considering he does not own the rights to the game.
“We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware. For me personally, it was a great project, and I have a lot of great memories for that game, but we’re not at liberty to speak to it.”
In another interview with Eurogamer, Miyazaki said how he holds the game very close to his heart and also loves that the reception of the game is still exceptional even after all these years.
“It is a title we hold very dear and just as much as our fans, It does make me very happy to see that there are still so many people passionate about it.”
Miyazaki’s interview confirms that he is still interested in a remake of the game, despite the IP of the game is still owned by Sony. Fans of the game also speculate that an internal legal battle is going on between Sony and FromSoftware over the rights of Bloodborne.
There’s a sliver of hope for Bloodborne fans
In the interview with Eurogamer, when asked about the potential for Miyazaki to remake Bloodborne he added the importance of modern hardware in these situations where old games are ported to new and better consoles, curating an experience for the player, that surpasses what was possible in previous generation games.
“I think having new hardware is definitely a part of what gives these remakes value. Things you weren’t able to achieve on previous generations of hardware, ways you weren’t able to render specific expressions – [new hardware] sometimes makes it possible. However, I wouldn’t say that’s the be all and end all.”
Miyazaki apologized in both interviews for not being able to talk much about Bloodborne because of legal reasons, but fans speculate that Miyazaki is hinting towards a remake of the game with the release of the PlayStation 6, which is rumored to be in production and will be released in late 2027.
Although Miyazaki did not confirm anything concrete about a Bloodborne remake and there might not be one shortly, he has shown interest in wanting newer hardware for previous generation games to be ported and made accessible to newer generation consoles. This could explain why Sony is stalling the exclusive title.
