Hours-long standoff ends after chase near Rancho Peñasquitos

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A police pursuit resulted in a standoff Friday near Rancho Peñasquitos.

The pursuit started around 4:30 p.m. when a California Highway Patrol officer on a motorcycle tried to pull over a car traveling south on Interstate 15 near Rainbow.

Instead of pulling over, the driver reportedly reached speeds of around 115 mph, evading law enforcement.

The pursuit ended at a cul-de-sac at Avenida Maria and Calle Juanito where a large law enforcement presence surrounded the suspect.

The suspect remained in the vehicle with the engine running, according to San Diego police. Negotiators worked for hours to convince the man behind the wheel to surrender.

The standoff ended at around 7:30 p.m. when the suspect got out of his vehicle.

The suspect appeared to have blood on his jacket, but CHP could not confirm why. Officers say the man did have a pair of scissors in the car.

The suspect was eventually taken away in an ambulance for a medical evaluation.
