How to Customize Weapons in The Forever Winter
I’m a sucker for weapon customization in video games. I love to personalize my gear, tricking out a rifle until it barely resembles the starting weapon and then losing it immediately because I suck at the game and spend too much time in the weapon customization menu. Anyway, here’s how to customize weapons in The Forever Winter!
How The Forever Winter’s Weapon Customization Works
You can customize many of the game’s weapons, with seemingly few exceptions. To start, open up the game’s menu by hitting ‘ESC’ and then navigate to “Combat Loadout.” From here, select one of the guns within your inventory, such as the stock AK. With it selected, turn your attention to the bottom HUD, which now displays information on the weapon and a new option: “Customize.” Hit that!
You’ll receive the above screen, which allows you to swap out various parts on your rifle, such as:
- Magazine
- Upper Receiver
- Barrel
- Handguard
- Pistol Grip
- Stock
- Gas Tube
- Muzzle Device
Select any of these categories to pull up a list of your available weapon attachments. Once you select a new part, you’ll note the change to the weapon model in the right-most window. Once you equip various attachments or parts, choose “Save As Preset” from the bottom of the HUD to save a variation of that rifle in your inventory. You can then drag and equip that rifle variant.
Here’s the thing, though. You likely won’t have any parts available until you run a few raids or spend some credits. For now, you’re stuck running stock weapons, but that’s okay because it allows you to test out the weapon platforms and get a feel for the game’s combat.

Where to Find Weapon Attachments
You can entice new vendors to visit your hub area by increasing your available water. Then, you can buy attachments from weaponry vendors. Surprisingly, the best way to acquire new weapon attachments in The Forever Winter is not from the vendors.
I’ve had more luck finding unique weapon attachments out in the world. If you loot the bunkers around the battlefield at Scorched Enclave, there are usually a few crates up on the topmost sections that spawn attachments. I was lucky enough to find three attachments in a single crate.
Of course, looting attachments within a raid means you must extract with them. If you don’t extract, you don’t get the loot.
You’ll find that The Forever Winter is brutal playing solo, but it’s a totally viable way to enjoy the game! If you have any tips to share for the game, we’d love to have you join us on the official Insider Gaming community forums!
