How to Join the Freestar Collective

Factions are very common in Bethesda’s titles, and as you explore the world, you may be asking yourself how to join the Freestar Collective. It’s one of the five major factions in the game, and joining it comes with some unique benefits.

The tradition has carried on from previous Bethesda titles, where players could pick a side in a war or join a guild and take advantage of its resources and partnerships. Space can be a dangerous place, so it’s always a good thing to know you have friends in the stars who can provide backup when needed.

What Is the Freestar Collective in Starfield?

One of Bethesda’s strengths is to create worlds that feel alive and dynamic. Factions within its worlds help to create a sense of change, as the player is led to believe there are events set into motion that they have not directly participated in.

While many players and critics have stated that Starfield doesn’t live up to the hype it created, the studio has included a number of factions that the player will encounter throughout the story.

The Freestar Collective is one such faction you will encounter as you progress through the main questline, and you will also have the chance to join it. But should you? Well, similar to knowing which skills to invest in the early game, you should decide after you learn more about this group.

The faction is an offshoot of the United Colonies and is composed of people who wished to remain outside of the influence of the United Colonies. You’ll notice they all dress in Western attire, and this reinforces their role as outlaws in the story. They are one of the two governments of the Settled Systems, with their influence extending across the territories of Narion, Cheyenne, and Volii.

It was formed in 2189 and went to war with the United Colonies in 2196, and there have been several skirmishes after that, leaving behind a tenuous peace agreement between the Freestar Collective and the United Colonies.

How to Join the Freestar Collective and Should You Do It?

Joining this faction will require you to visit its headquarters in Akila City on Akila in the Cheyenne system. You’ll eventually come across a bank robbery that you need to stop as part of the “Job Gone Wrong” quest. This event will occur when you get closer to the GalBank building and notice some miscreants have taken a hostage.

You have the option to speak to the criminals via an intercom after interacting with the marshall. If you’ve put some points into your Persuasion skill, you’ll be able to diffuse the situation without bloodshed.

Otherwise, you can go the traditional way of firepower and might. Whichever method you choose, you’ll end up completing the mission, and the marshall will direct you to then speak with Emma Wilcox inside The Rock.

Emma will require you to take on and complete a task from the Mission Board, which will result in you completing the second quest “Deputized” and also enable you to finally join the Freestar Collective. You’ll get a new gun and an outfit as a joining bonus as well. Now, you can take on the remaining six quests for this faction and get yourself some sweet rewards along the way.
