I Can’t Believe Mike Cerny Actually Had the Audacity to Say PS5 Pro Made AMD Develop a “Next Step” Technology Even AMD’s Own GPUs Lack

In the field of console war, there is one aspect in which PlayStation has always left Xbox a thousand miles behind. And that aspect is the hardware configuration. Microsoft’s console company can boast of superior subscription service, but it has a long way to go to catch Sony’s strong hardware setup.

Now that is why games usually run more fluently and look more vivid on the PlayStation 5 as compared to the Xbox Series X (Series S doesn’t even count in the comparison). However, the same thing is going to happen with PS5 Pro, as it will be packed with some of the most high-end GPUs. But the way Sony is marketing it is really awful and an utter disrespect to AMD.

Sony’s Lead PlayStation System Architect Blatantly Claimed to Have Motivated AMD’s Future GPUs

Sony’s Mark Cerny has some baseless claims regarding AMD’s ray-tracing system.

In the world of high-end gaming, ray-tracing has become a hot topic. This technology is a rendering technique that stimulates how tight behaves in a 3D scene by tracing the path of light rays as they interact with objects. With this, modern-day games look closer to real life.

PS5 Pro is not an exception as well. This highly modernized console will be sharing its ray-tracing hardware with AMD’s upcoming RDNA 4 GPU architecture. Still, there are controversies regarding the price of the recently released console.

Everything was great so far, until the Lead PlayStation System Architect of the company, Mark Cerny, claimed that Sony “motivated” AMD to bring these high-end GPUs a reality. He also stated that PS5 Pro leverages RT hardware from AMD that is not available in other GPUs on the market. This is what Cerny had to say about the upcoming console (via CNET):

PS5 Pro uses the new advanced [ray tracing] feature sets that AMD created as the next step in their roadmap architecture. But if you look around, there are no other AMD GPUs that use it yet. We motivated the development, and I’m very happy we did so, the response from the developers has been extraordinarily great.

Now the disgraceful fact is Cerny’s demand to have the next-gen RDNA 4 GPU from AMD just because of their motivation. That means he wanted to make a mark that, without Sony’s push, AMD would have never come up with something futuristic like this.

AMD has been making GPUs for Sony since PlayStation 4. So, making an absurd comment like this is surely disrespectful for one of the top GPU makers in the market.

AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs Will Be Mainstream Graphics Cards from January

Cerny is already wrong with his claim of “motivating” AMD to make RDNA 4 GPUs. Now, his other claim of these higher-end GPUs being only available on PS5 Pro is also not correct.

According to Benchlife (via Igor’s Lab), AMD is going to roll out its RDNA 4 GPUs at the CES show in January. And not only that, these chips will be available for the mainstream userbase to win back major market share from Nvidia.

The company has also started boot-testing the RDNA 4 cards using its upcoming Navi 48 and Navi 44 GPUs. AMD’s senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Business Group, Jack Huyhn, also stated that the company is eyeing an increase in market share in the GPU market from 19% to at least 40–50%.

So, this rumor easily tells you that Cerny’s statement is utterly baseless, and neither Sony ever motivated AMD to surface RDNA 4 GPUs nor these chips are only available on PS5 Pro. Not only on high end, these new chips will be available for midrange and budget-friendly configurations as well.
