‘I was born in a concentration camp’

Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke says her mother gave birth to her shortly after arriving at Mauthausen concentration camp on 29 April, 1945.

She and her mother Anka Bergman both survived, with Mrs Clarke saying one of the reasons for this was that the Germans had run out of gas for the gas chambers just a day earlier.

“She always said she was screaming not only because she was in labour but because she thought this was her very last minute on earth,” said Mrs Clarke.

Mrs Clarke, who took part in the Wales National Ceremony to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, came to live in Cardiff with her mother and stepfather in 1948, staying in the city until she was 18.
