India to probe fire at major iPhone plant run by Tata
STORY: India said Sunday it will conduct a forensic investigation of the cause of a major fire at a plant making iPhone parts.
The blaze broke out over the weekend at a Tata Electronics factory in Tamil Nadu state.
It left at least 10 workers needing medical treatment, with two hospitalized.
An official says the fire began in an area used to store chemicals.
And it’s just the latest in a series of incidents at Apple suppliers in India.
The tech giant has been moving production there in a bid to lessen its reliance on China.
Apple also sees India as a big growth market for its products.
Production of parts was halted by the blaze, and was not expected to resume on Monday.
It wasn’t clear if the fire affected surrounding buildings, one of which is due to host an iPhone assembly line by year end.
A local official says the fire is now completely out, and the output of fumes has stopped.
There was no immediate comment on the latest reports from Apple or Tata, but the Indian firm has previously said it is investigating what happened, and would take steps to safeguard employees.
