Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Has 2 In-Game Features to Force the Player to Explore More
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set for a December 9 release date and there’s a lot of hype behind it. Creators MachineGames will bring fans back to the thrill of discovery with more than just a big world and quest markers to drive players deeper into exploration.
It implements aspects from both classic Indiana Jones movies and modern game mechanics, to go beyond simply replicating cinematic moments. With a narrative-driven approach and the opportunity for free exploration, the devs are confident that players will be motivated to find hidden secrets and explore the world deeper.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Encourages Player Curiosity
One of the ways the developers at MachineGames have incentivized exploration is through a system called Adventure Points. These points are scattered across the world and can be earned by uncovering hidden secrets, solving puzzles, and completing missions.
Players can then use these points to unlock a variety of abilities. For instance, the True Grit skill lets Indy survive what would otherwise be a fatal blow, mirroring the iconic character’s resilience.
The second major feature revolves around how the narrative and environment work together to draw players into exploration. As creative director Axel Torvenius mentioned,
We have two different ways to prompt the player to go on exploration. You can send them off with just the mission update. But we’re also trying to craft an environment that will encourage exploration.
MachineGames has also cleverly designed the environments to encourage curiosity. Axel Torvenius, the game’s creative director, noted that the team wanted to create levels that make players wonder, “What’s behind the next corner?” or “What if I climb that temple?”

The environment itself becomes a puzzle and invites players to interact with it in different ways. Besides a structured narrative path, the developers have included several open-world sections filled with secrets, optional missions, and hidden treasures.

The sheer size of the world, as described by the developers, is the largest that MachineGames has ever created, offering plenty of room for players to wander and discover new things at their own pace. Player curiosity will be key.
This Is The Biggest Game MachineGames Has Made
MachineGames has a history of delivering good games, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle continues that legacy by combining action with cerebral puzzle-solving. The game takes inspiration from the Chronicles of Riddick games and will feel familiar to players of the series.
His whip and journal aren’t for nostalgia, they are part of the exploration. For example, the journal starts as a blank slate but gradually fills with maps, photos, and notes that guide players through the game. The whip is used not only in combat but also for traversal, swinging across chasms, or disarming traps.

The game is also a blend of linear and open-world sections. While certain parts of the game will guide players through a more traditional, story-driven experience, others will allow for free exploration.
The creators want to wow us not just through narrative and mechanics but through the sheer joy of discovery. Whether these promises are real or not, we will find out on December 9, 2024.
