Indiana Jones Won’t be Doing the 1 Thing in The Great Circle That’d Make PETA Haunt MachineGames Forever

Indiana Jones is known for his iconic whip, rugged adventures, and encounters with everything from ancient traps to Nazis. In MachineGames’ upcoming game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, fans of the legendary archaeologist can rest assured that Indy’s relationship with animals, particularly dogs, won’t take a dark turn.

Unlike the brutal treatment of dogs in the studio’s previous Wolfenstein series, The Great Circle takes a gentler approach. Creative Director Jens Andersson shared that the game, set to release in December, takes a family-friendly approach and stays true to Indy’s character as a “dog person.”

Indiana Jones Will Make His Grand, Family Friendly Return In December

MachineGames’ previous titles like Wolfenstein are infamous for their intense violence, even involving genetically modified dogs that would sometimes explode. But there will be no such gratuitous violence in the upcoming game as the studio takes a different approach to it.

Jens Andersson, the game’s creative director, explained in an interview with IGN that while dogs do appear as enemies, the worst players can do is scare them away. Indy’s affection for dogs is central to his character; after all, his nickname came from his beloved family dog.

It’s a family-friendly IP in many ways…. How do we do that well? Well, these are the kind of things that we do. We have dogs as enemies, but you don’t really hurt the dogs. You scare them away.

For the studio, this backstory was a defining factor in choosing how animals would be treated in The Great Circle, particularly as they focused on preserving the essence of Indiana Jones as a family-friendly intellectual property.

While Nazis remain the primary antagonists in The Great Circle, MachineGames ensures that the game reflects the more adventurous, heroic spirit of the franchise.

The game is set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, where Indy tracks down stolen artifacts across the globe. Instead of just combat, players can expect to solve all kinds of puzzles using Indiana’s iconic whip, with combat focused on stealth and non-lethal engagements whenever possible.

MachineGames has ensured fans that the game reflects the more adventurous, heroic spirit of what fans expect, in contrast to Wolfenstein’s gritty, survival-focused style. Players won’t be left wanting action though.

The game promises plenty of close combat, including fights with bare fists, Indy’s trusty whip, and, occasionally, his pistol. Nevertheless, the designers suggest that gunplay, even against enemies, will be sparingly used if at all. So all the focus is on the adventure and not the action.

Despite being a linear, story-driven experience, The Great Circle will allow players the flexibility to return to previously visited areas. This makes it so players can complete side quests and areas without having to do everything again or disrupt the story.

The game’s nonlinear options extend to mission styles, particularly in open sections like the Giza desert. Here, players can explore more freely, engaging in side objectives, completing puzzles, and even blending into Nazi camps using disguises.

There will be lots to see and even more to do. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arrives on Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9, 2024, with a PlayStation 5 version scheduled for spring 2025.
