Indonesia raises smoking age, will curb cigarette ads

Indonesia has raised the minimum age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21 as part of changes intended to curb the deadly habit in a country with one of the world’s highest smoking rates.

A country of 270 million people, Indonesia is one of the world’s top producers of tobacco and has about 70 million adult smokers, according to a 2021 World Health Organisation survey.
