Industry Insider Has Bad News For Final Fantasy Fans, Claims FF 7 Rebirth Sales are Not Even Close to Beating Remake

The year 2024 saw the release of some highly anticipated titles, FF 7 Rebirth being one of them. Being a PS5 exclusive, it was an improvement over its predecessor. The game received critical acclaim at launch. Many lauded the combat and the enemy variety in the game, which made it exciting.

It was a PS5 exclusive and was released on February 29. The game’s story begins after the events of the FF 7 Remake. It also came with a better open-world environment compared to its predecessor. While the game was liked by the critics, it also had a great commercial run during its launch.

FF 7 Rebirth sales reports revealed

While FF 7 Rebirth had a great run at launch, the game seems to have fallen behind now. New reports state that FF 7 Rebirth which came out in February has reported sold only half of what FF 7 Remake did in the same timeframe.

This was revealed by Daniel Ahmad, who is the director of research and insights at Niko Partners. During a discussion on X, regarding the FF 7 Rebirth, Ahmad adds that the highly-anticipated game didn’t meet its sales expectations. Ahmad posted on X,

It’s selling about half of what Remake sold in the same timeframe and looks like it’ll have a weaker tail (prior to any PS+-like release)

When asked about the source of these sales data by other X users, Ahmad added that it is coming from “equities research reports, who are getting the data from the usual trackers”.

While this is bad news for FF 7 fans, many have mentioned that the Remake and the Rebirth shouldn’t be compared. This is because the Remake was released during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since there was a lockdown everywhere, more and more people played the game.

In comparison, FF 7 Remake was one of the fastest-selling titles on PS4. Moreover, by 2023, the game sold more than seven million copies.

Fans talk about a FF VIII remake

When we talk about Final Fantasy titles getting a Rebirth or Remake game, one cannot forget FF VIII. FF VIII came out in 1999 and went on to win several awards. The game became a better hit than its predecessors and most of the credit goes to the visual changes made in the game.

The game has a Metacritic score of 90%. Owing to this success, the game was re-released in 2009 on the PS Store. By 2019, it sold nearly 10 million copies. As such, it is obvious for the fans to want an FF VIII remake.

While no official news is there about an FF VIII remake, a discussion was started by @RinoTheBouncer on X, regarding the same. While fans are happy with the hypothesis of the game getting a remake, many also pointed out the changes they want to see, if it ever comes out.

Some pointed out the changes they want to see in the lore, from the idea of having challenging side quests, to having an action-based combat system.
