Insider Outlines SEGA’s Plans For New Slate of Games

Back at The Game Awards 2023, SEGA announced that it was making five new games based on classic franchises like Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage. Six months later, reliable insider Midori has an update the development of various games in the lineup.

In a lengthy Twitter thread, Midori said that a number of the games have been pushed to a fiscal year 2028, including Games as a Service (GaaS) titles based on Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. These GaaS titles would be coming after the full Unreal Engine 5 remakes of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.

“Internally, both the Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi plans had already been previously delayed two different times, including the original reveal dates for the projects.,” he said. “The previous plan before this month was to release Jet Set Radio remake and reboot in 2026 and Crazy Taxi in 2027.”

She continued: “The Remake titles were supposed to release a short while before the reboots for fans of the original titles who did not want to play the GaaS reboots that are currently in development.”

Speaking of the remakes, she says that the Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio remakes were “very similar” to the originals. They will have some feature improvements and additions, however, including multiplayer for Crazy Taxi. Day one cosmetic DLC is also planned for the games.

In addition to those two games, Midori says that Golden Axe was originally planned to release in 2023. It got to the point that marketing plans were created for the game, but then, obviously, plans changed internally with the game not yet officially revealed.

“And now SOA [SEGA of America] is more involved in development and marketing of SEGA titles than before,” she said. “And communication has become more consistent between SOA and SOJ for these titles as part of global initiative. It is not just for Sonic titles.”
