Insomniac Isn’t Talking About the Upcoming Wolverine Game Because They “have to be like Logan” and “remain very stoic” About it

Did you know there is an official Marvel’s Wolverine game in the works? That too by Insomniac Games, the studio that made the Marvel’s Spider-Man games? If you did not, don’t worry because there are still tons of people out there who don’t either. But there is a game in the making and we just got an update about it.

The game was first revealed way back in 2020 at a PlayStation showcase with a short and empty trailer and no additional details. Well, thanks to a new interview with Insomniac Games’ CEO and Co-studio head, we now know why it’s been pretty much radio silence since then.

Insomniac has one of the better reputations in the gaming industry right now and the studio really solidified its place with the excellent work that it put into the Spider-Man games. That is why Marvel entrusted another one of its beloved characters into their hands. Co-head Ryan Schneider talked about this in a PlayStation Blog post back in 2021.

In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit.

Following its success with Spider-Man, the studio seems like it is planning to give Wolverine a more mature tone. That’s on top of the signature standalone, emotionally charged story. And with the era that it’s being developed in, we can expect some cutting-edge graphics and mechanics too. But why has Insomniac given us so little updates over the last 5 years?

Well, Insomniac co-head Chad Dezern just revealed why in an interview he had with Variety. He didn’t mention a release date for the game. He didn’t really say a whole lot, but he did talk about why the studio has been mysteriously silent regarding the project.

We’ve announced ‘Wolverine,’ and we’d love to talk more about ‘Wolverine,’ but we have to be like Logan today, and remain very stoic until it’s time to pop the claws down the road.

While it does seem like he’s very excited to talk about it himself, his statement is basically just a nothing burger. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad though. There are simply not enough details to speculate on anything right now, but the studio’s track record has nothing but positive vibes for what’s coming next. That doesn’t mean the road can’t be rocky though.

The development process has been everything but smooth

The journey toward Wolverine’s release hasn’t been without challenges. The studio faced a huge data breach back in 2023 where hundreds of gigabytes of data, including a full development build of the game was leaked. The leaks claimed a 2026 release timeline, but Insomniac didn’t confirm or deny that at the time.

In the same Variety interview, Ted Price, the studio’s founder and CEO, announced his retirement after more than 30 years at the helm. The previously mentioned Chad Dezern and Ryan Schneider, alongside Jen Huang, will now serve as co-heads after Price’s retirement. The trio already have decades of combined experience between themselves and will aim to continue to deliver.

All in all, the silence regarding the project is definitely deafening, but there is no reason to panic. At least not just yet. Until the time comes for Insomniac to “pop the claws,” we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what the developers are cooking up.
