International Museum Day on Saturday, May 18

Admission will be free to museums and archaeological sites, while many museums, both public and private, will host a variety of events.

With the theme “Museums for Education and Research,” museums across the country celebrate their World Day, as they do every year, on May 18. According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the choice of this theme aims to highlight museums as vital spaces of convergence between education and research, where innovation meets tradition, covering a wide range, from art and history to science and technology. Therefore, they can contribute significantly to understanding the world.

The Greek Department of ICOM has selected the Museum of Contemporary Greek Culture as the honored museum for 2024, appreciating its particularly scientific and educational work.

It is noted that on the day of the celebration, admission will be free to museums and archaeological sites, while many museums, both public and private, will organize a plethora of events not only on the specific date but also around it.

More information about this year’s theme, “Museums for Education and Research”is available here.

We remind you that free admission to museums and archaeological sites under the Ministry of Culture is valid on the following dates:

  • March 6, Melina Mercouri Memorial Day
  • April 18, International Day for Monuments
  • May 18, International Museum Day
