Is Sony Run by a Child? Their Cheap Gimmick of Humiliating Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is Unbecoming of a $116 Billion Company
Those who were fortunate enough to be around the release of Sony’s PlayStation 2 were treated with an incredible experience that can never be forgotten with all sorts of unique games.
Many gamers consider it the best console of all time, and statistically, that’s actually the case now. Sony has updated the PlayStation website to mention that the PS2 has sold a staggering 160 million units since its release.
However, it’s quite amusing how the company throws such stats whenever Nintendo gives us an update for Switch 2.
PS2’s Latest Sales Figures Prove Sony is Losing Against Nintendo
Originally debuting all the way back in 2000, the PS2 succeeded the original PlayStation and was a massive success from the get-go. Alongside releasing games that showcased leaps between PS2 and PS1, the PS2 also featured backward compatibility.
According to Sony, the PS2 has now sold over 160 million consoles worldwide since its 2000 launch, up from a previous figure of 158.3 million. The sales figures for the console were confirmed by the company’s former President and CEO, Jim Ryan, back in March 2024.
While it’s incredible to see the achievements that PS2 has achieved, the release of such figures proves that Sony is dead scared of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Before it was announced that Sony’s PS2 took the top spot, the reigning champion was none other than the Nintendo Switch, which has already shipped over 146 million units worldwide since its 2017 release.
With this reveal, Sony wants to put the spotlight on its own family of consoles because it’s obvious that once the next Nintendo Switch console drops, it will break all records held by PlayStation in the gaming industry. Sony knows about the impact of Nintendo’s handheld and is now even diverting its own resources to producing a competitor.
Rumors Suggest Sony is Making its Own Nintendo Switch 2 Rival
There’s no denying the fact that manufacturers have grown interested in the gaming handheld market after the success of Nintendo Switch and Valve’s Steam Deck 2022. Major tech companies have hopped onto the bandwagon and brought their own iterations of a handheld console.
New rumors suggest that Sony recognizes the potential of this space and is planning to bring a new PlayStation handheld. According to Bloomberg, the progress of the console is still in the “early stages.” It’s said that the handheld will be able to play PS5 titles on the go.
However, it’s still years away from release, and there’s still a chance that it might never hit the shelves. Sources also suggested that Sony’s PlayStation Portal was supposed to be a Steam Deck-like device initially. However, the next portable Sony console builds upon the PS Portal as its inspiration.
The handheld project’s purpose is to expand Sony’s reach within the market and eating into Nintendo’s portion of the market. With the Switch’s successor right around the corner and even Xbox testing its own handheld consoles, Sony doesn’t want to lag behind in this space and intends to leave its mark with another PlayStation handheld.
With that said, do you think a PlayStation handheld console will be able to compete against the Nintendo Switch 2? Let us know in the comments below
