Jockeys Blake Spriggs and Beany Panya airlifted to hospital following horrific fall at Moruya
Group 1-winning jockey Blake Spriggs remains in a critical condition following a horrific fall at Moruya on Friday afternoon, while Beany Panya is set to undergo spinal surgery.
Spriggs and Panya were both airlifted to hospital after they were dislodged from their horses while rounding the turn in the sixth race.
The remaining two races on the card at Moruya, a small town 175km south-east of Canberra, were abandoned.
Their mounts, Blesstas and The Boomerang, remarkably escaped injury.
The jockeys, who both suffered head injuries, were admitted to ICU at Canberra Hospital.
Spriggs, 32, was reported to have suffered significant chest and abdominal injuries that will require surgery, as well as fractures to his ribs and clavicle.
On Saturday morning, Racing NSW said “is in a critical condition and he will continue to be monitored closely over the next 24 hours.”
NSW Jockeys added that he has shown “positive signs” since arriving at hospital.
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Panya woke up late on Friday night, but will require surgery after suffering two fractures in her spine.
“Beany woke up and recognised her partner and fellow jockey and friend Robyn Freeman by her side,” sister Deanne wrote on Facebook.
“Although she doesn’t remember the fall she asked a few questions about the event and had a little chat.
“She has fractured her T6 & T7 and will go in for surgery today (Saturday).”

NSW Jockeys and Racing NSW released further updates on Saturday morning, saying Panya is out of ICU and is unlikely to require surgery on her head injuries.
The incident happened when Spriggs’ mount Blesstas appeared to clip the heels of the leader and crash to the turf.
The Boomerang, ridden by Panya, was racing on the outside of Blesstas and also fell as a result.
Spriggs, who has 654 wins in his career, was riding for the first time since a suspension.
