Katie Ledecky’s 13th Olympic medal is a silver, but one for the record books.

From Stockholm to Seoul, Rome to Paris, every Summer Olympics since 1912 has included women’s swimming, and of all the hundreds of entrants over that period, from dozens of nations, no one has won more medals than Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky of Bethesda, Md.

She secured that distinction on Thursday night, swimming the third leg for the Americans’ 4×200-meter freestyle relay team, which overpowered every other quartet but Australia’s, to pump her collection through four Olympics to 13 medals. No female American Olympian, in any sport, has won more.

It was Ledecky’s fourth silver, to go along with eight golds and one bronze, and her third medal of these Games. One event in Paris remains for her, the 800 freestyle. Call it a hunch, but considering that Ledecky has come away with no worse than gold in the 800 in each of the last three Olympics, she just might add to her total.
