The game director for Kingdom Hearts 4, Nomura Tetsuya, has stated that this instalment has been made “with the intention” of heading to the conclusion of the series.
In a new interview with Young Jump (via aitaikimochi on X), Nomura Tetsuya discussed how he envisions Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link as fresh titles rather than sequels. Tetsuya stated that he “wanted to kind of reset the story” after Kingdom Hearts 3, which is why the team brought on new writers and revamped the logo, making it easier for newcomers to join the series.
When asked about Kingdom Hearts 4, Tetsuya Nomura mentioned that he plans to retire in a few years. Fans are curious whether his retirement will come before the conclusion of the Kingdom Hearts series. However, he clarified that Kingdom Hearts 4 is a game intended to eventually move toward that conclusion.
Talking about resetting the story for Kingdom Hearts 4, Tetsuya stated, “For those who know how KH3 ends, the reason why Sora ends up like that in the ending is because we wanted to reset the story in a way” This decision has made it easier for newcomers to join the stories directly from KH4. Testuya concluded by stating that fans who have been playing the KH series will feel “Oh, it’s like this” when starting the new game, but this will allow the new players to enjoy the experience, too.
