Live-Action Legend Of Zelda Movie Planned To Come Out This Decade

Sometime in the next five years, Link should show up on the silver screen with the Master Sword in hand. Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda movie is planned to arrive in theaters before the end of this decade.

In Nintendo’s second-quarter financial results for fiscal 2025, the company gave the live-action film a vague release date of 202X. That means Nintendo aims for The Legend of Zelda movie to hit theaters before 2030–further reinforced since 20XX is utilized elsewhere in the briefing regarding future hardware and software. Before then, “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” will premiere April 3, 2026.

The Legend of Zelda movie was announced almost exactly a year ago, and Nintendo is teaming up with Sony Pictures Entertainment on the live-action film. Kingdom for the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball is helming the project. The filmmaker wants to swing for live-action Hayao Miyazaki aesthetics with The Legend of Zelda movie, as well as for it to “feel like something real.”

Haley Joel Osment has expressed his desire to play Link–a bit jokingly, to be clear–while Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer thinks it “would be so cool” to portray Zelda in the film. Meanwhile, Tingle creator Takaya Imamura wants Heroes actor Masi Oka to portray the spandex-wearing character if he appears in the movie.

No official casting has been announced at this time.
