Magnitude 5 earthquake strikes near Oregon Coast, aftershocks possible

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Feel a rumble on the Oregon Coast? That’s because a Magnitude 5 earthquake hit early Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The USGS reported the quake took place at 43.695°N 125.693°W — which is 117 kilometers, or 72.8 miles, northwest of Barview, Ore. — just before 1 a.m.

A Magnitude 5 earthquake is strong enough to cause damage.

A Magnitude 5 earthquake could lead to aftershocks nearby, with a 47% chance of smaller Magnitude 3 earthquakes in the area within the next week, according to USGS.

“Magnitude 3 and higher aftershocks are large enough to be felt nearby,” the USGS reports. “The number of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a large aftershock can temporarily increase the number of aftershocks.”

As of Friday morning, no aftershocks have been reported.
