Man forces woman into car before assaulting elderly motorist: police

A man who police allege forced a woman into his car before fleeing and crashing into another car was stopped after a woman bravely disabled his vehicle.

Police allege the 21-year-old man threatened a woman known to him shortly after 6pm on Sunday before demanding she get into the Mazda 3 he was driving.

Officers tracked the vehicle from an unmarked police car before deploying a tyre deflation device on Nambour Connection Rd, near Queensland’s Big Pineapple.

The driver allegedly accelerated away before running a red light and crashing into a Toyota Camry; leaving the vehicle, he allegedly fled on foot into traffic.

A Toyota RAV4 stopped on the Bruce Highway before the man allegedly punched the 64-year-old driver several times in the head and pulled him from the car.

Police allege the 21-year-old then got into the RAV4 and attempted to drive away but was stopped by a 52-year-old woman still in the passenger seat.

The woman pressed the vehicle’s “push button”, with the man unable to restart the vehicle, as the wireless keys were with the elderly male driver.

The Nambour man was then arrested and has since been charged with one count of domestic violence-related deprivation of liberty.

He was also charged with robbery with violence and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in court on Tuesday.
