Margaret River listed as leading location for kangaroo crashes

Margaret River has once again scored high in a ranking no one wants — named as one of the worst regional locations for accidents involving kangaroos.

AAMI this week released its Decade of Driving Report examining the last 10 years of crash claims data.

Margaret River scored third in kangaroo hits behind Baldivis and Carnarvon.

While the region was renowned for its roo crashes already, the situation was worsened last decade after commercial pet-food producers ceased taking carcasses from local shoots which was believed to keep the kangaroo population in check.

The insurer’s analysis also found the most dangerous times to drive in WA Statewide were between 1pm and 4.30pm, with Friday being particularly troublesome.

Among the remarkable insights, the report found that drivers above the age of 65 were the most dangerous behind the wheel, with just over a quarter of claims being attributed to them.

When it comes to the battle of the sexes, women won out over male drivers.

Men were “significantly” more likely to crash, accounting for 54 per cent of claims.
