Marvel Rivals’ Adam Warlock Accused of Being an Overwatch Rip-off, and It’s Not a Good Look
Marvel Rivals recently dropped a preview of one of its playable characters, Adam Warlock. His gameplay looks interesting, but not for the reason you might think.
No, some people find it interestingly familiar. Several people have not hesitated to point out a huge similarity his gameplay has to another game’s character. And yes, it’s exactly the game you’re thinking of.
People Accuse Marvel Rivals Adam Warlock of Copying Mercy
The upcoming Marvel game has faced many accusations about copying Overwatch 2 in its many facets. This is nothing new, just another to add to the ever-growing list.
From the similarities between Black Widow and Widowmaker, the game’s UI, the maps, all the way down to its very premise, it’s all been the target of accusations at least once.
The latest focus seems to be on Warlock, who has some abilities that might seem familiar if you’ve played Blizzard’s game.
Created to be the perfect being, Adam Warlock represents the peak of human evolution. Able to manipulate mighty cosmic power, he represents life, light, perfection and virtue as he quests to brighten humanity’s path towards their full potential.

In the preview, we can see that Warlock can resurrect allies within a certain radius. If you played Blizzard’s game way back in the day, this might give you PTSD flashbacks to Mercy’s ability to do the same.
Of course, it was so insanely overpowered and unbalanced that her kit was reworked into only reviving a single teammate while being locked to a cooldown. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Warlock eventually face the same fate.
Is the Upcoming Marvel Game Doing a Little Too Much?
The similarities between the two characters’ kits didn’t go unnoticed, and people rushed to point them out.
“Hey Overwatch, can I copy your homework again?”
“Sure man just make sure you change it a bit”

To some people, Warlock’s ability is a repackage of Mercy’s.
If his ability does eventually get nerfed, another round of accusations will hit the game.

Denying the two abilities are similar is kind of like denying the obvious. That being said, Blizzard didn’t invent the ability, and Marvel Rivals won’t be the last game to implement it.
His passive and mass rez are giving me a bit of a Mercy OW 1 PTSD but I trust in the team to balance them out!

One player already talks about balancing the ability, and a reply suggests that adding a longer cooldown should do the trick.
Undoubtedly, though, having Warlock in the game means teams will try to die together in the same spot if their push is failing.
What is your opinion on the discourse? Is NetEase trying too hard to copy Blizzard, or is it just inevitable with both being hero shooters? Let us know in the comments below!
