Massive PS4 Game Library? Hereā€™s Why Dropping $700 On The Overpriced PS5 Pro Could Actually Be A Game-changer

After months of anticipation, Sony finally announced the PS5 Pro in a recently-streamed technical presentation. The mid-generation console boasts some massive improvements over the current PS5ā€™s capabilities, with more than 50 games to feature new upgrades when it launches on November 7th, 2024.

However, PS5 Proā€™s asking price has proven to be a hot topic among gamers, with many considering $700 too much just for a console. Some even believe that building a PC would be a financially better decision. However, dropping that amount on the console might be worth it if youā€™re looking to experience classic PlayStation 4 games.

PS5 Pro will Massively Benefit the Classic PS4 Games

In a recent interview, PlayStationā€™s Senior Principal Product Manager Toshi Aoki discussed a range of topics related to the upcoming PS5 Pro and explained how the console will be beneficial to gamers who are looking to play PS4 games with enhanced capabilities.

According to Aoki, the upcoming PS5 Pro will use a new feature dubbed ā€œImage Quality Boost.ā€ This will allow you to upscale PS4 titles without requiring you to use the PSSR feature. The console will be able to dramatically boost the resolution, but itā€™ll only improve frame rates if theyā€™re unlocked.

For many PlayStation titles, itā€™s been a tradition to lock them at 30 FPS, but weā€™ve seen a surge of unlocked frames in recent years, perhaps because the game developers knew that PS5 Pro was right around the corner.

The feature will apparently be an option that can be switched off and on at your discretion. Itā€™s worth keeping in mind that PS4 games already get a significant boost on the standard PS5, but Aokiā€™s comments suggest that thereā€™ll be some kind of additional setting exclusive to PS5 Pro, which could bring further improvement.

Although we havenā€™t been given examples of how exactly this feature works, all PS4 games right out of the box will benefit from this enhancement, alongside 40-50 PS5 titles.

Aoki also states that PlayStation 5 Pro will prevent any frame rate decrease in PSV2 titles, which will certainly be helpful in reducing the sickness experienced while using the headset.

PS5 Pro is Facing Massive Challenges Before Launch

A few weeks ago, analysts predicted that PS5 Proā€™s hefty price tag wouldnā€™t affect sales that much, and ultimately, it would be comparable to PS4 Pro. However, things arenā€™t looking too good for the mid-season upgraded console.

Earlier this week, The Vergeā€™s senior editor, Tom Warren, stated that the PS5 Pro is facing challenges when it comes to sales. The console still hasnā€™t managed to sell out in the US or the UK which is quite bizarre. Warren believes that the price is an outright reason holding back prospective buyers.

Most complaints surrounding the console are related to its lack of novelty and high price. Not only will PlayStation 5 Pro have no exclusive titles not already available to play on the base PS5, but the $700 price is far too much for many players. Whatā€™s even worse is that the consoleā€™s price is amped up to the next level in other countries, costing as much as $919 in the UK, for instance.

Itā€™s still too early to predict how well the console will perform. The PS5 Proā€™s 30th Anniversary Edition sold like hot pancakes, revealing that thereā€™s still some interest in one of the most controversial hardware of the decade. Letā€™s hope the consoleā€™s ability to enhance existing PS4 games can prove to be the saving grace.
