Memphis police officer, civilian killed after Downtown car crash, second cop critically injured

A Memphis police officer and another individual are dead after an apparent crash near Downtown Memphis early Friday morning, the Memphis Police Department said in a social media statement.

According to MPD, police responded to a two-vehicle crash just after 3 a.m. at Mississippi and Danny Thomas boulevards. When they arrived, three men were found injured. Two of those men were MPD officers.

All were taken to Regional One Health in critical condition, MPD said, where an officer and the driver of a gray Nissan were pronounced dead. The other officer remains in critical condition, MPD said.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the gray Nissan was also suffering from a gunshot wound,” MPD said in the statement. “The cause of the crash and the location of the initial shooting are still under investigation.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and MPD’s homicide bureau is investigating the shooting.

In an update posted to social media Friday morning, MPD said the initial shooting happened near South Parkway East and Mississippi Boulevard, about 2 miles away from where the crash happened.

“Preliminary information indicates there was a disagreement between the deceased male shooting victim and a male at the scene on S. Parkway E.,” MPD said. “No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.”

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
