MG topples Mitsubishi to offer Australia’s strongest new car warranty

MG Motor Australia is launching a market-leading new car warranty across its entire range.

From today, August 1, it’s moving to a 10-year, 250,000km warranty, replacing the seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty coverage it currently offers on its vehicles.

This applies not only to the brand’s combustion-powered vehicles, but also its electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

All models also have a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre anti-perforation and paint warranty.

There is a caveat with MG’s new warranty. If your vehicle is being used for commercial purposes, the warranty coverage is reduced to seven years or 160,000km – whichever comes first.

“We are listening to our customers,” said MG Motor Australia chief commercial officer Giles Belcher, noting a longer warranty can make new car buyers more confident in a brand.

“MG’s 10-year warranty delivers unmatched peace of mind and ensures that you are fully supported on every journey.

“When it comes time for our customers to upgrade their car, we want them to turn to us first. We have a stack of great product in market and more on its way, so we want people to try us sooner than later.”

Coinciding with the longer warranty, MG has also slashed prices of its ZS EV and MG 4.

While Mitsubishi introduced a 10-year warranty in 2020, it has only 200,000km of coverage. It’s also only valid if you service within Mitsubishi’s dealer network, otherwise it maxes out at five years or 100,000km.

It’s unclear if other companies will follow MG and Mitsubishi’s example and move to 10-year warranties.

Warranties have continued to get longer over the years. Hyundai Australia led the charge for five-year warranties, introducing its then-market leading coverage in 1999.

Kia subsequently introduced a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty in 2014, with companies like GWM and SsangYong subsequently following suit.
