More Than Meets the Eye? Dev Hints at Bigger Plans Beyond Initial Flop Reveal

The developers for Concord probably didn’t have such a great time after the game was first announced. People were dunking on it left and right for many reasons, and had written it off completely in their books.

It’s not the end for the people that tirelessly worked on the game, however. In a new interview, the game’s director of IP Kim Kreines, and lead character designer Jon Weisnewski, address the criticism and have some things to clear up.

There’s More to Concord Than What We Saw

In an interview with VideoGamesChronicles, the director of IP and lead character designer spoke a little about the game and how it offers a lot more than what the trailer revealed.

"That trailer is a tiny slice," Concord Exclusive Interview

Kreins acknowledged the mixed reception of Concord‘s trailer, but clarified there’s more to look forward to:

That controversial trailer… that moment is such a tiny slice of everything that we’ve been working on for years and years and years.

The plan is to drop more information about the game over time and help players connect with the personalities, relationships, and backstories of the characters. This will offer a whole new level of depth to the game.

Kreines also appreciates the audience for engaging with the trailer, despite the criticism.

If Firewalk can change everyone’s mind about the game through the upcoming content drops, it’ll be a huge win, seeing as how many have made up their mind about it.

So What Does the Game Actually Have to Offer?

Jon Weisnewski, Concord‘s lead character designer, emphasized that one of the core strengths of Firewalk Studios is their focus on creating immersive and fluid gameplay.

He talks about the team’s expertise in building games that feel tremendous in the player’s hands:

The second they pick up the controller, the game just comes to life and every action is responsive.

Weisnewski, a gamer who’s spent countless hours playing different titles in the genre, understands that the ultimate test of a game’s success is how it plays.

He also addressed concerns about character and setting integration in a competitive environment:

It’s a competitive PVP game, which means that for players to be competent, they need to be able to make split-second fight-or-flight decisions.

Weisnewski described the “round-the-corner test,” where players have to recognize and react to the character they encounter almost immediately and make a decision whether to fight or make a run for it.

The team ensured their designs met these standards by giving special care to character design, environmental storytelling, and other facets of Concord. Everything was curated to give players the best experience possible.
