The Ministry of Culture, through the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, is proceeding with the restoration of the Mycenaean wall on the eastern plateau of the Acropolis, in the area of the Old Museum.

According a Ministry announcement, this project represents a crucial step in both the protection and the enhancement of one of the most important surviving sections of the Mycenaean fortifications of the Acropolis Rock.

The restoration of the Mycenaean Wall near the Old Museum of the Acropolis was deemed necessary, as it preserves and highlights one of the best-maintained sections of the Acropolis’s Mycenaean fortifications. Currently, the area is not accessible to visitors, as it had mainly been used to store scattered architectural members.

With the completion of the works, scheduled for the first half of 2026, the area east and north of the Old Museum will open to the public, with a specially designed visitor route based on the study of the eastern section of the Acropolis plateau.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated: “The Acropolis, apart from being the foremost monument of classical antiquity, is also a place where evidence from different historical periods coexists and survives. By restoring and highlighting the Mycenaean wall-one of the best-preserved sections of the prehistoric fortifications-and by shaping a new visitors’ route, we are preserving a unique monument. We shed light on the city’s long history across the ages, offering visitors the opportunity to discover aspects of the Acropolis Rock that until now remained unseen and unknown to the wider public,” Culture Ministry Lina Mendoni has stated.

The project is connected with the upgrading and reopening, with new uses, of the Old Museum, as well as with the ongoing restoration and enhancement works on the Acropolis monuments.

Stressing the systematic upgrading of visitor services on the Acropolis site since 2020, the minister added that new routes were recently opened, such as the walk on the north slope, enriching the visitor experience, while a new  gift shop is now operating to meet the needs of the site.
