New Video Shows Whale That Capsized Boat in Portsmouth Shortly After Incident

New video shows the whale that capsized a fishing boat off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, shortly after the incident on Tuesday, July 23.

Footage filmed by a fisherman named Scott shows the whale lunge-feeding on menhaden near fishing boats shortly after capsizing a vessel.

“While fishing for striped bass off NH coast we came upon an area full of bait. We also saw the boat that had recently been capsized by a whale. I then noticed the pogies getting nervous and began to film when the whale breached. We soon left the area to fish elsewhere,” Scott told Storyful.

Video by Colin Yager of the astonishing moment the breaching whale knocked the boat and the two men on it sideways into the ocean went viral last week.

The whale did not appear to be injured in the encounter, and the vessel was salvaged, according to the US Coast Guard.

Sara Morris of the University of New Hampshire Shoals Marine Laboratory was quoted by local media as saying that the whale was likely lunge-feeding when it came in contact with the boat. Credit: Scott via Storyful
